Owners take over part of leased land

V. S. Palaniappan

COIMBATORE: The owners of 23.87 acres in Singanallur, which is in the custody of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for the last 66 years, today took possession of a part of their patta land. The AAI took possession of the lands for the purpose of war under the Defence of India Rules of 1979 and fixed a lease rent of Rs. 10 per acre per annum. The landowners decided to take possession of the land declaring that it was under the "illegal custody" of the AAI. They took possession of 19.4 acres (for which lease rent has not been paid since 1987. They left 4.5 acres with the AAI since it housed the wireless transmission tower. The landowners have now renewed their appeal to expedite acquisition proceedings in respect of the remaining land and to fix a fair lease rent in the interim. The land is located outside the newly-built compound wall, which shows that the AAI do not need it any more, says D. Ravichandran, one of the landowners. In the absence of any claim from the AAI, the landowners have the right to use the land for own use.
