Commodity prices

The following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Friday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: Groundnut oil - 50.50, palmolein oil - 39.75, sunflower oil - 48, tamarind (flower variety) - 21 to 26, tamarind (Karipuli variety) - 39 to 46, chilli - 13 to 19, rice (2716) - 12, rice (super fine) - 14, rice (Sona Masoori) - 16 to 17, rice (Samba Masoori) - 15 to 16, black gram - 22 to 25 and red gram - 22 to 26.50.

Power shutdown

The following areas under Suryaraopet section will not have power from 7 am to 12 noon, on Saturday: Eluru Road (from Chuttugunta to Machavaram Down), Maruthinagar, S.R.R

College, Anjaneya temple area, Karmikanagar, D.B.K Street, Revenue Colony, Narlavari Street and BSNL.

Officials visit Vambay Colony

The Commissioner of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), V. Usha Rani, on Friday asked civic officials to identify places where there was a need for public tap, in Vambay colony.

Speaking to an official team that visited the colony, Ms. Rani asked them to make sure that development works were taken up in a systematic manner.

SCR facility

The South Central Railway (SCR), Vijayawada division, has introduced `voice activated train enquiry' system to enable people to know the arrival and departure time of trains. The system could be availed by dialling 134.

Helpline set up

The Superintendent of Police, Railways, R.B Naik, on Friday, said a helpline was set up for rehabilitation of street children.

Speaking at a meeting organised by members of the Rotary Club of Vijayawada Centennial in coordination with the SKCV Children Trust, he complimented the club for organising the rehabilitation programme. The club president, Vidya Kanna, and others were present.

Award for eye specialist

C. Dileep Kumar, an eye specialist from Gudivada in Krishna district, has been selected for the International Gold Star Award and Certificate of Excellence, instituted by the Society for Friendship and National Unity, a voluntary organisation.
