YELLANDU (KHAMMAM DISTRICT)WARANGAL: Maoists thrashed at least 10 supporters of the CPI (ML New Democracy) after branding them police informers in villages of Yellandu mandal in the early hours of Saturday. Supporters of the New Democracy struck back targeting sympathisers of the Maoists. Tension gripped at least half a dozen villages, including Komararam, Bombay Tanda, Polaram and Manikyaram, following the attack and counter attack.
Police picket
The police were rushed to the area on receipt of information. A police picket was also posted at Komararam to defuse tension. Both groups had been at loggerheads for quite some time. Villages units of New Democracy, backed by its dalams, had been resisting Maoists' moves to step up their activities. Some of the families in these villages, which had reportedly been enjoying the support of the Maoists, had shifted their loyalties from the New Democracy to the TRS. Maoist dalams, which stormed the houses of New Democracy loyalists beat them and threatened them with dire consequences. A youth, Rambabu, and a few others incurred their wrath. They were asked to mend their ways or face the consequences. As they withdrew from the villages, New Democracy supporters sealed the road and wreaked havoc on houses of those actively associated with their rivals. The Yellandu Sub Divisional Police Officer, Veera Reddy, and the Inspector, Sarvar, rushed to the villages. They conducted a meeting with leaders of rival groups in Polaram village. Despite efforts of the police to restore normalcy, some families deserted the villages fearing further trouble.
