NDA meeting on Monday

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: : A meeting of National Democratic Alliance leaders has been called on April 18 at the residence of its chairman, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to discuss the Opposition's parliamentary strategy for the second part of the budget session starting on April 19.

The Government's April 13 affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that the Central Bureau of Investigation will look into the Kargil coffin purchases and 22 other defence deals is a subject that the NDA is expected to take up vociferously. In an affidavit on April 5 the Government stated that no financial rules had been violated in the purchase of coffins during the Kargil war.

The Bharatiya Janata Party deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, V.K. Malhotra, said here on Friday that the Opposition would also demand the tabling of reports of the Phukan Commission (on the Tehelka affair) and the Nanavati Commission on the Gujarat riots.

The BJP has already demanded that the Central Vigilance Commission's reports on defence deals should be tabled in Parliament although the Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, has charged that when Mr. Fernandes was Defence Minister he had refused to make that report public.

Mr. Malhotra said the BJP would also move amendments to the Finance Bill to give more tax concessions to senior citizens, women and government servants.

The party leader said the NDA would like to discuss in Parliament the result of the visit by the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, who is arriving here tomorrow.
