CPI(ML) Red Flag call for harmony

Staff Reporter

Communal tensions in Alapad

KOLLAM: The CPI(ML) Red Flag has called for the need to isolate the forces engaged in creating communal tension at the tsunami-devastated Alapad panchayat. At a press conference here today, the party's State secretary, P.C. Unnichekkan, alleged that the Sangh Parivar organisations were exploiting the plight of the tsunami victims and spreading communal hatred in the region.

He said the communal appeasement policies of the United Democratic Front Government were affecting the harmony in the region. He said that if such forces were to be given a free hand, communal harmony of Alapad would be jeopardised.

Relief programmes

The construction of permanent houses for the tsunami victims, were being delayed owing to the attempt by communal forces to monopolise the rehabilitation programmes. The various rehabilitation schemes are yet to yield results. The money sanctioned for relief works that reached the State Government have not been utilised in a judicious manner. Even when it came to providing temporary shelters, the Government acted irresponsibly by handing over that task to religious and spiritual organisations. The Government promoted the activities of such organisations at Alapad under the guise of rehabilitation programmes, he alleged.

This has resulted in uncertainty looming large over the rehabilitation programme. He called upon progressive and democratic forces to come together and oppose the nefarious agenda of the communal forces at Alapad. The CPI(ML) Red Flag will organise a dharna in this regard in front of the Karunagapally KSRTC bus stand at 4 p.m. on April 19.
