COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation will construct a bus stand for Omni buses in a two-acre plot available with the civic body at the erstwhile grass market on Sathyamangalam Road.

The Mayor, T. Malaravan, along with the Minister for Backward Classes, S. M. Velusamy, and the Corporation Commissioner, Anil Meshram, inspected the site this morning. Officials from the Engineering Department of the civic body explained about the proposed facility.

The civic body has planned to invest Rs. 15 lakhs for the construction of shops to serve the purpose of a booking counter for the Omni bus operators.

The booking counters meant for the bus operators to service the bus users would fetch rent revenue for the civic body. The civic body would level the undulations in the site. It was originally meant for stocking grass, the feed for the bullocks used by the Corporation for its conservancy operations.

It would not be a full-fledged bus stand as construction involved a lot of procedures and it would have to meet certain set standards. The facility would serve the parking needs of the Omni bus operators who encroach upon roadside spaces on all arterial roads during peak hours. The site could accommodate 40 Omni buses. The bus operators can park the vehicles at least for 30 minutes before departure.

As of now, the Omni bus operators occupy a substantial portion of the roadside space on the busy stretches like Dr. Nanjappa road (from Park Gate to G.P. Theatre Signal on Sathyamangalam Road), Gandhipuram, V.K.K. Menon Road and certain areas of Ram Nagar. The bus operators take more time to load parcels and cargo while they take only ten to 15 minutes for passengers to board the buses.
