KOCHI: The Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Keralam (VFPCK) is organising a `fruit and vegetable mega show' on April 19 and 20 at the Ernakulam Town Hall. The Minister for Agriculture, K.R.Gouri, will inaugurate the programme. At a press conference on Saturday, the council chief executive officer, Ashok Kumar Thekkan, said the carnival would have ethnic and exotic varieties of fruits and vegetables for exhibition as well as sale. Seeds, saplings and value-added products would be on sale, he said. Competitions in vegetable carving and fresh flower arrangement would be held as part of the exhibition. A new horticulture programme `Harithanagari' will be launched on the inaugural day. The programme envisages cultivation of vegetables on the courtyard and terrace of houses.
Free facilities
About 100 families below poverty line would be provided with free facilities under the programme. Self-help groups of about 6,000 middle class families would be members of the scheme. They will be given seeds and guidelines free of charge. Upper class families can avail of the services for Rs. 2,500.
