dated April 18, 1955: Vasan on role of cinema

Mr. S.S. Vasan, president, Film Federation of India, said at Bhusawal on April 15 that Indian cinema had done a lot of good to the people socially and culturally. If progressive legislative elements like those dealing with marriage, divorce, property and social disability were having a smooth passage in our legislatures, it was entirely because of the groundwork prepared for them by countless Indian films on such subjects. Mr. Vasan, who was inaugurating the third annual general meeting of the Central Cine Circuit Association, said the peculiar misfortune of our country, when compared to other picture-producing nations, "is that we have to make pictures in nearly ten languages. This is unheard of in other countries where they make a picture in only one language - not only that, they are also able to export that single-language picture to various countries, including, of course, our own. Somebody may ask why not we too make pictures in a single language instead of frittering away our resources in multilingual projects. A litle reflection will show that this is not feasible. The greatest attraction for an Indian picture, and its greatest advantage over a foreign picture, is its language."
