ERODE: Ten thousand temples in the State will be renovated in 2005-06 at an estimated cost of Rs. 25 crores under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Board, said the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister, P.C. Ramasamy. Distributing free cycles to girls of the Kodumudi SSV Higher Secondary School in Kodumudi here on Saturday, he said that with a view to developing education the Government had sanctioned Rs. 232 crores to construct buildings in 549 Government High Schools in the State. Further, Rs. 62 crores had been granted to provide free books and note books for 95 lakh students in the Sate this year. Last year, Rs. 44.10 crores was spent to construct 140 hostels for the students, and this year, 318 hostels for the backward, most backward and adidravida students would be built at a total cost of Rs. 100 crores. The Minister said that Rs. 20 crores was granted to form self-help groups and Rs. 300 crores for the construction of 3,500 rural houses. The Government sanctioned Rs. 5,000 crores for the 1000-MW electricity project in the State. Over Rs. 400 crores was sanctioned to provide protected drinking water in all rural areas. The Erode District Revenue Officer, K. Nagarajan, said that 4,169 pattas were distributed to the needy in the district last year as against the target of 4,000. The president of the school administration, V.P. Subbarayan, the Secretary, T.K. Subramanian, and the Chairperson of Kodumudi Panchayat Union, Revathy Thangavel, spoke.
