BELGAUM: Noted Bandaya writer, Satish Kulkarni, has deplored the government for targeting progressive thinkers by treating them as naxalites. Speaking at a book release function here on Sunday, he said though a gap existed owing to the lack on any meaningful intellectual and progressive discussion on various socio-economic and cultural issues with the Bandaya and Dalit movements becoming irrelevant, the Government was reacting harshly to any progressive thought. His observation came as a response to him being referred to as a "naxalite poet." He said that the harsh ground realities made it inevitable for the people to take up arms. Mr. Kulkarni, who released a collection of Kannada poems titled Hemagarbha by Shweta Nargund of Belgaum, felt that many of the poems in the book were mainly out of personal experience and addressed women's issues. The author strongly protects the pride of a woman while portraying the inherent element of self-confidence. He expressed concern over the lack of continual intellectual discussion on various issues, including literature, among the writers, poets, and thinkers. Gurudevi Huleppanavarmath and Guruling Kapse spoke. Noted writer, Rum. Sha. Lokapur, presided over the function.
