NEDUMBASSERY: Air-India Express (AIE), the no-frills subsidiary of Air-India that is slated to launch its services on April 29, is yet to receive landing rights in Muscat, the Chairman and Managing Director of Air-India, V. Thulasidas, has said. Speaking to presspersons at Cochin International Airport in Nedumbassery on Sunday, Mr. Thulasidas said that tickets to Muscat were yet to go on sale. The Oman authorities seem to have some reservations in giving clearance to the AIE. Maybe they fear an adverse impact on the prospects of Oman Air if they open skies to the AIE. He, however, said the notion was misplaced as the AIE, being a no-frills airline, offers lesser facilities when compared with airlines such as Oman Air and, therefore, there exists no ground for such apprehensions. Under an existing agreement between the two countries two carriers from India are allowed to operate to Oman, the slots now being occupied by Air-India and Indian Airlines. There will be no legal tangle on granting clearance to the AIE, as Air-India will cease its operation to Muscat with the arrival of the no-frills subsidiary. The Government of India has taken up the matter with the Oman authorities and Mr. Thulasidas himself has visited Oman along with a civil aviation official to clear the misgivings. ``We are still hopeful of getting the clearance before April 29. If it does not happen, Indian expatriates working in Oman will be the losers,'' he said. He said there was no proposal for a direct flight between Kerala and the United States, as the present passenger traffic in the sector did not justify it
