Nataraja idol shorn of cosmic background
T. Ramakrishnan
CHENNAI:
The Bronze Gallery, the most attractive part of the Government Museum, Egmore, wears a "new look" these days with the change of display arrangement for a Nataraja idol.
Till recently, the several centuries-old exhibit sported an attractive appearance as it was kept in a diorama showcase made of vinyl pasted on acrylic material. Fibreglass light tips gave the idol a "cosmic effect".
A changing light pattern of seven colours added to the attraction.
It was during the 151st year celebration of the museum in June 2003 that the gallery was rearranged and the "cosmic background" provided to the idol.
When the President, A.P. J. Abdul Kalam, took part in the celebration, he spent some time at the gallery and was attracted to the "cosmic Nataraja." Now the idol is without all these adornments.
Several discerning culture buffs have questioned the rationale behind the move.
