CHENNAI: : Tamil Nadu on Sunday became the first southern State to offer Logistics Post, a service provided by the Postal Department to transport heavy consignments from one place to another. Initially, it will be available in the Chennai-Hosur-Chennai segment, with intermediary stations at Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore and Ambur. The minimum chargeable weight is 50 kg. There is no upper weight limit. If the consignor gives more than one article or piece and all of them addressed to the same consignee, the package will be treated as one consignment and the charges worked out accordingly. Tariff will be based on the weight and volume of goods. At a nominal extra cost, pick-up, loading, door-delivery, including unloading and storage of goods before despatch or delivery, will be offered. The booking points in Chennai are the Business Post Centre on the premises of the Anna Road Head Post Office, the Logistics Post Centre at the St. Thomas Mount head post office, and the Park Town and T. Nagar head post offices, besides the Greames Road, Guindy Industrial Estate, Padi and Perungudi sub offices. While the Kancheepuram, Ranipet and Vellore head post offices will provide the service, the Ambur and Hosur sub offices will function as the booking and collection points. Launching the service, U. Srinivasa Raghavan, Member (Operations and Marketing), Postal Services Board, said Maharashtra and Rajasthan were the other States to operate the service. Vatsala Raghu, Chief Postmaster General, Tamil Nadu Circle, said it would be extended to Tirupur and Coimbatore in the next phase.
