Activists disfigure English hoardings

Staff Correspondent

Prominence sought for Kannada in hoardings

MYSORE: Kannada activists here launched a campaign today against English hoardings and disfigured them seeking prominence to Kannada in all advertising and commercial hoardings.

The activists targeted business establishments on D. Devaraja Urs Road, K.R. Circle, JLB Road and other commercial centres such as Shivarampet and demanded that 75 per cent of the space in billboards and hoardings be reserved for Kannada.

The campaign to disfigure English hoardings began early in the day and took owners by surprise.

The activists were on the streets by 6.30 a.m. near MUDA circle and went past Devaraja Urs Road targeting many shops that were not "giving prominence" to Kannada.

When H.S. Shankarlinge Gowda, MLA, arrived to lend support to their cause, a few activists took objection to the English number plate on the vehicle, following which Mr. Gowda himself opted to disfigure the number plate with grease and paint.
