MANAMA: Amid reports that U.S. and Iraqi troops have launched an operation to free an estimated 150 Shia hostages, three American soldiers have been killed and seven wounded in a mortar attack in the Sunni stronghold of Ramadi. The Dubai-based Al Araybia television has reported that the task of freeing the hostages in the town of Madaen, 40 km southeast of Baghdad had begun. Iraq's state-run Al Iraqiya television, however, quoting an Iraqi official, said that the rescue bid would start only after dark. Hundreds of Iraqi troops, armed with machine guns and rifles have surrounded the town. U.S. troops are covering the outer ring.
