Dippenaar dazzles

PORT-OF-SPAIN: Boeta Dippenaar's unbeaten 167 helped South Africa reach 349 for three at stumps on the opening day of its two-day `friendly' against the Vice Chancellor's XI of the University of the West Indies at the St. Augustine Campus here on Saturday.

Dippenaar's innings put him in position to replace the injured Jacques Rudolph in the South African squad for the third Test against the West Indies starting on Thursday in Barbados.

He struck 20 boundaries and two sixes off 252 balls in a knock that has lasted 341 minutes so far.

Dippenaar and Herschelle Gibbs, who made 81, added 124 for the third wicket.

Gibbs misread left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed's googly to be stumped by skipper Ridley Jacobs shortly after tea, with the score at 230 for three.

Mark Boucher was 53 not out at close. The pair has put together 119.

Earlier, the visitors took lunch at 83 for one after being put in by Jacobs. A.B. de Villiers was out for 12.

The scores: South Africa 349 for three (B. Dippenaar 167 batting, H. Gibbs 81, M. Boucher 53 batting) v Vice Chancellor's XI of the University of the West Indies. — AP
