Sudarshan against abolition of Legislative Council

Correspondent

The Legislature and Judiciary should work with mutual respect.

KOLAR: The Legislative Council has a role to play in the affairs of the State Government and it is improper to insist on its abolition, V.R. Sudarshan, Chairman of the Council, said here on Saturday.

Participating in a "Meet-the-press" programme organised by the District Journalists' Association here, Mr. Sudarshan said it is unfortunate that some States have abolished their Upper Houses.

Urging them to revive the Second Chamber, Mr. Sudarshan said as the Council is represented by representatives from various fields, the voice of the people reaches there.

He said a committee has been set up to explore the possibility of "live telecast" of the proceedings of the Legislature. He has written to the Prime Minister and the Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister on this matter. He expressed the hope that the proceedings of the Legislature would be telecast live in future, he added.

Referring to the relations between the Legislature and the Judiciary, Mr. Sudarshan said they should work with mutual respect.
