LUCKNOW: While the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership is firmly committed to the NDA, the Uttar Pradesh BJP announced on Sunday that it would contest the coming Assembly polls alone. "We have decided against any pre-poll alliance in future polls in U.P.," said the State party president, Keshrinath Tripathi, after a two-day "Chintan Baithak" (meeting) with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leaders here. The meeting, close on the heels of the RSS chief, K. Sudarshan's controversial statements on senior BJP leaders, also discussed in detail the ways and means to strengthen the party at the grassroots level. Addressing a news conference, Mr. Tripathi said that a "core group" had been constituted over suggestions made in the meeting. "It was a consensual decision to go it alone in the polls," he said. Mr. Tripathi remained non-committal on post-poll alliances. "We considered that the BJP always stood a loser in pre-poll pacts, while the other party benefited," he said. UNI
