`Chitradurga will not have thatched huts'

Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA: Chitradurga will soon become a town without a thatched dwelling if the pace of distribution of houses to the poor is maintained, the Deputy Commissioner, S.R. Umashankar, has said.

Delivering the presidential address here on Saturday at the foundation ceremony of a locality of 90 houses built under the Ashraya scheme at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Nagar, he said that new huts should not come up overnight just to take the benefit of the scheme announced by the Government for the uplift of the poor. A few people with vested interests are coming in the way of slum clearance, he said.

Beneficiaries are expected to pay an advance of Rs. 3,000 instead of Rs. 5,000 under the Rajiv Gandhi housing scheme, as funds under food-for-work scheme have been adjusted here.

Four house apartments have been built under the scheme, with an empty space of 15 feet to every house that enables the extension to be taken up at a later stage, Mr. Umashankar said.

The Chitradurga MLA, G.H. Thippa Reddy, who laid the foundation stone, said that the houses were needed to rehabilitate people living in temporary structures put up at I.T.I. College. He claimed that over 6,000 houses have been distributed during his tenure as legislator and wished to invite the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, to flag off an ambitious scheme of constructing 1,300 houses at Chelugudda. He asked the beneficiaries to plant trees in front of their houses.
