DAVANGERE: The former Union Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader C.M. Ibrahim has demanded reservation for minorities in Assembly and Parliamentary elections on the lines of that given in gram panchayat and taluk panchayat elections. Inaugurating a programme organised to create political awareness among the minority communities here on Saturday, Mr. Ibrahim said that despite many programmes being implemented for their development, minority communities continue to be politically suppressed. He said that at least 30 per cent reservation must be provided for minority communities. However, the reservation should be given depending on the population of the community in a particular region, he said. He said that when he visited Uttar Pradesh as the Union Minister a few years ago, he had noticed that the State did not have even five government Urdu schools despite the fact that 30 per cent of the population there was Muslim. The Minister for Social Welfare and in charge of the district, Y. Nagappa, said that the Government should provide reservation to different castes among the minorities to avoid a particular caste dominating the system.
