KURNOOL: A case was registered against 12 persons in connection with attack on SCs at Alamkonda of Krishnagiri mandal in Kurnool district. The upper caste Hindus reportedly slapped four Scheduled Caste persons accusing them of defiling the temple by entering it. According to reports, the villagers have been organising special prayers to the local deity Sunkulamma as half of the village had fallen sick. Four persons died of fever and other complications. A Scheduled Caste person, Sriramulu, also visited along with his six-year-old grand-daughter who was also sick and made her lie on the temple steps. A woman priest, Anantamma, objected to the act saying that he had defiled the temple. When she was in trance and claimed to be communicating to the holy spirit, she chastised the `errant person'. The SCs protested against this inviting the wrath of the caste Hindus, who beat up four persons.
SP's visit
Following this, the SP, Malla Reddy, visited the village and spoke to the victims. Cases were registered against 12 persons including the woman priest. The officers said it had happened due to superstitious belief among villagers. The situation was said to be normal in the village. The non-SCs of the village said they got angry because the person spoke ill of their belief and tried to enter the temple with slippers on. They claimed that the SCs had been worshiping in the temple for long and were allowed into the temple.
