MADURAI: The Indian National League (INL) will maintain equidistance from both the major Dravidian parties in the State for now, the party president, M. Basheer Ahmed, said here on Sunday evening. Addressing reporters, he said that both the ruling All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had let down the Muslims. These parties had done nothing to improve the condition of the Muslims over the years. The INL would convene a meeting in Chennai to decide its stand on the by-election in the Gummidipoondi and Kancheepuram Assembly segments. Claiming that Muslims were socially and economically deprivedon account of backwardness, Mr. Basheer demanded the State Government introduce at least five per cent reservation for the community in Government jobs. The INL asked the Congress-led Government at the Centre to initiate measures and rebuild the Babri Masjid at the original site and hand over the rebuilt structure to the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board. He said the mosque should be rebuilt in the interest of the Muslims and the onus for ensuring this rested solely on the Congress Government.
