Tahsildar attacked

VELLORE APRIL 17. The Tiruvannamalai Tahsildar, R. Dayalan, was attacked by a group when he intercepted a lorry carrying blue metal pieces at Ettapalayam near here on Saturday night.

On information that sand was being smuggled from Tirukkovilur, Mr. Dayalan, conducted a vehicle check. When the lorry did not stop, he chased and intercepted it. Eight persons, including the lorry owner and his sons, attacked him. He was admitted to the government hospital at Tiruvannamalai. Four persons were arrested. — Staff Reporter

Jayalalithaa greets Pandian

CHENNAI: The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary and Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today greeted the newly elected State council secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), D. Pandian. She said Mr. Pandian was an outstanding parliamentarian, effective trade unionist and acclaimed speaker.

Revenue officials' plea

TIRUCHI : The Tamil Nadu Revenue Officials Association has urged the Government to give jobs to the legal heirs of revenue officials died in harness.

The resolution was adopted at the district conference on Saturday.

It also urged the Government to withdraw the Tamil Nadu Essential Services Maintenance Act, merge 50 per cent of Dearness Allowance with the basic pay and create additional post for operating computers in revenue offices. — Staff Reporter

Woman, daughter

commit suicide

CUDDALORE: A woman and her 20-year-old daughter committed suicide in their house at Kamarajar Nagar here on Sunday. The police said M. Kalaiselvi (45) had some differences with her husband, Munusamy, a forest ranger. The police have booked a case. — Special Correspondent

Theatre screen damaged

CUDDALORE: Miscreants on Sunday damaged the screen at Lena Theatre at Chidambaram, showing the Kamal Hassan starrer, `Mumbai Xpress'.

During intermission of the noon show, a group slashed the screen with blades and escaped. However, the show went on. A couple of days ago, the Dalit Panthers of India functionaries met the manager Anbu and demanded that the name of the film be changed. Mr. Anbu informed the police. — Special Correspondent

MDMK leader arrested

DINDIGUL: The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam functionary, Durai Napoleon, was arrested on the charge of dowry harassment in Uthamapalayam on Sunday.

Acting on a petition submitted to the Madurai South Zone IG, women police registered a case and arrested him.

Vanitha (30), Nepoleon's wife, said her husband harassed and sent her back to mother's house. She got married in 1989 and her parents offered him 75 sovereign gold jewels, a motorcycle and cash Rs.1.5 lakhs. — Staff Reporter

One killed in accident

DINDIGUL: One person was killed and 17 were injured when the van in which they were proceeding to Chitharavu collided head on with a town bus on the Dindigul-Batlagundu main road at Kuttiyapatti, near here on Sunday.

Mohammad Sultan (23) of Chitharavu died. The injured were admitted to the Dindigul Government Hospital. — Staff Reporter

One killed, 2 injured

ERODE: One person was killed and two injured in an accident here on Saturday.

According to the police, Murugan (26) of Veerappanchatram was proceeding to Chitode with his brother and friend Ponnuswamy in his minidor auto.

Near Gani Rowthar Tank, the auto fell on its side when hit by a State-run bus.

Murugan died at the Government Headquarters Hospital, and the other two were sustained grievous injuries. - Staff Reporter

ERODE: The Superintending Engineer, Erode Electricity Distribution Circle, informed that the grievances day for the Erode South Electricity division would be conducted on April 19 at 10.30 a.m. at the office of the Executive Engineer, Gandhiji Road, here.

Salesmen fined

ERODE: Salesmen of various Public Distribution Scheme (PDS) outlets in the district were fined a total of Rs. 20,000 on Saturday for irregularities.

The Joint Registrar of Cooperatives, B. Joghee, said that the raids were conducted by the Department officials on 62 outlets.

Irregularities such as commodities being under weighed, preparation of bogus bills etc were detected during the raid.

Employees at the outlets were instructed to distribute commodities in right measure. - Staff Reporter

Two men arrested with

illicit liquor

Tuticorin: Two persons were arrested on charges of transporting illicit liquor in a moped at Ettayapuram near here on Saturday.

On suspicion, a special team intercepted them in front of the Singapore Complex. They duo were in possession of 10 litres of illicit liquor kept in a can. The accused and the vehicle were taken into custody.

Motorbike stolen,

youth held

Tuticorin: Veerakumar (20) was arrested on Saturday on a charge of stealing a motorbike, which was parked on the sides of the Pudur-Kadalkudi Road.

The police said the accused stole the motorbike belonging to Sivaraj on April 16. The vehicle was recovered.

Tuticorin: The police are on the lookout for Selvam, who had allegedly assaulted a 50-year-old man at Kovilpatti on Saturday.

According to the police, Selvam attacked Jeduraj with an iron rod owing to enmity and inflicted injuries on him. The injured was admitted to the Kovilpatti Government Hospital.

Old man found murdered

Tuticorin: Angappan (54) was found murdered in front of his house at Muthalankurichi on Sunday.

The police said the deceased had served jail sentence for murdering his wife last year. He recently came out of the prison and was living at Muthalankurichi.

The police said Angappan's two sons, who are working in Tirupur, had committed the murder, as they had a grudge over him for having killed their mother. A search is on for the sons.

Three pedestrians

injured

Tuticorin: Three persons were injured when a bus hit them while they were walking along the NH-7 at Kayathar on Saturday.

The police said while Karuppasamy (26) and Samudrapandi (23) were admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College, Balasubramanian received first aid at a hospital at Kayathar.

The Kayathar police have registered a case.

Auto driver nabbed

for attacking friend

Nagercoil: Manoharan of Rajakkamangalam, an auto driver, was arrested on Sunday on a charge of attacking his friend with deadly weapons, owing to enmity.

According to the police, Manoharan had a wordy quarrel with Manikandan of the same area regarding a road accident. Manoharan and his friends waylaid Manikandan and attacked him. He was admitted to Asaripallam Government Medical College Hospital. The police are on the lookout for his accomplices.

Donation for

tsunami relief

Nagercoil: The Colonel M.S. Sandhu of the 11th (Tamil Nadu) Battalion NCC has donated Rs.38,000 towards tsunami relief services of the Carmel Higher Secondary School.

The tsunami relief services is involved in various relief measures, including the management of a tailoring unit, which is being run with 40 sewing machines to train tsunami-affected women at Ramanpudur.

Dental care unit in PHCs

Nagercoil: A separate unit for dental care in primary health centres will function from April 20 onwards. In the first phase, the unit will be opened in the four primary health centres, including Senbagaramanputhur, Kothanallur, Edaicode and Muttom on Wednesday.

Villagers can make use of the facility for three days in week (i.e.) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.

Such units will be formed in Theni, Dharmapuri, Selam, Namakkal, Kanyakumari, Dindugal and Madurai (west) districts, said the Health Minister, N. Thalavai Sundaram.
