PATHANAMTHITTA: The annual Valiya Padayani at the Kadammanitta Bhagavathy Temple, near here, will be held on April 21. The Padayani festival, popularly known as Kadammanitta Padayani, began with the customary `choottuvaipu' ceremony after the Athazha puja on Vishu day. The artistes wearing headgears and colourful costumes dance to the drum beats and the Padayani songs after the Athazha puja. The colourful `kolams' taken in a procession to the temple precincts is the highlight of the festival on April 21 evening. The `kolams' of Bharavi, Kalan, Yakshi, Pakshi, Madan, Marutha, Aana-marutha, Anthara-yakshi and Sundara-yakshi will be taken to the temple premises in a procession. People from different parts of the State come to watch the Padayani which gained popularity in the mid-1980's through the poems of Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan. The annual festival concludes with the Pakal-Padayani on April 23 morning.
