KOLLAM: : Investigations by the Crime Branch into the custodial death of Rajendran, 36, at the Kollam East Police Station on April 6 is now centred on a knuckleduster (a metal cover put on the fingers and used as a weapon) which had been used to assault the victim. Sources said investigations by the Crime Branch based on the autopsy report had exposed the use of the knuckleduster. The investigating officers have received information that the knuckleduster was bought at Bangalore and frequently used by a section of the policemen at the station during interrogations. It has also been learnt that a storeroom attached to the Police Museum Complex was being used as the interrogation room. Investigations will now concentrate on who punched Rajendran with the weapon. According to the autopsy report, Rajendran's ninth and eleventh vertebrae had cracked and it proved fatal. This had happened because of the blows with the knuckleduster. Four policemen attached to the station have been placed under suspension in connection with the incident. They are the circle inspector, R. Rajkumar, the additional sub-inspector, S. Babu, and two constables attached to the crime squad of the police station.
