Water from canal to help cotton seed sowing

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The supply of water from Indira Gandhi Canal for two segments of the command area - to facilitate the sowing of cotton seeds - has started with the Bhakhra Beas Management Board (BBMB) agreeing to increase the supply to Rajasthan from 9,000 cusecs to 11,000 cusecs per day till April 30.

The State Irrigation Minister, Sanwarlal Jat, said here on Sunday that the farmers and elected representatives from Sriganganagar, Hanumangarh, Bikaner and Jaisalmer districts had recently made a request to increase the quantity of water for irrigation.

The officials were asked to make arrangements for the sowing of cotton seeds and the water supply was started on Friday.

Mr. Jat said while the BBMB had agreed to enhance the water supply for the purpose, the State's quota for next month would be fixed at a meeting of the Board to be held on April 29. The State Government would attempt to get adequate water for the other two segments during May, he added.
