T. K. Balan.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI (M) MLA, T.K. Balan, died at the Medical College Hospital here on Sunday. He was 68. Balan, who represents Azhikode constituency in Kannur district, was found unconscious in the Malabar Express when it reached the railway station here this morning. The Railway Police rushed him to the hospital. Doctors said his death was due to `septicaemia', or blood poisoning, a rapidly deteriorating and life-threatening condition resulting from infection in the body. He was brought to the hospital at 9.45 a.m. The end came at 4.15 p.m. Balan had boarded the train at Kannur and was on his way to Kollam. Balan is survived by his wife, M. K. Sathyabhama, and three sons. This is his second term as an MLA, his first election to the State Assembly being in 1996. He is a member of the State Committee and Central Control Commission of the CPI(M). He had served as general secretary and president of the Kerala NGO Union and executive committee member of both the Federation of State Employees and Teachers and the All India State Government Employees' Federation. He was also president of the Kannur District Council. Balan's body was taken from the hospital to the AKG Centre, the CPI(M) State headquarters, for the people to pay their last respects. It was later taken by road to Kannur, where the cremation would be held tomorrow. he body would be placed at the district offices of the party and at the Deshabhimani office in Kochi for people to pay homage. The Governor, R.L. Bhatia, the Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, all the other Ministers and the leaders of all major political parties have condoled Balan's death.
