THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Top politicians and leading personalities in the cultural field have expressed their profound grief over the death of singer and stage artiste KPAC Sulochana in Kayamkulam today.

In a condolence message, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, said Sulochana's contributions to the stage and Malayalam songs would be remembered by the people of the State for all times to come.

The Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, described her as a `shining red star' in the annals of the communist movement in the State. The songs she had sung for the KPAC's dramas such as `Ningal enne Communistakki' (You made me a communist) had inspired the toiling masses to rise against the forces of exploitation and make a social revolution possible in Kerala, he added.

The Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, said she was an artiste who had won for herself a permanent place in the hearts of the Malayalam-speaking people. Her songs kindle nostalgic sentiments in the minds of the people of the State.

The former Chief Minister A. K. Antony said her name would be etched in the history of Malayalam stage.

The CPI State secretary, Veliyam Bharghavan, said her contributions as a singer and stage artiste would be fondly remembered by the people of Kerala.

The Tourism Minister, K. C. Venugopal, described her as an artiste who had left the stamp of her personality on the cultural life of the State.

The Minister for Cultural Affairs, A. P. Anil Kumar, said Sulochana had played a pivotal role in making the dramas of KPAC a hit in the 1950's and 1960's. Her songs have a freshness that will never wither with the passing of time.

The Revenue Minister, K. M. Mani, the Minister for Cooperation, M. V. Raghavan, the former Chief Minister P. K. Vasudevan Nair and the chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, T. K. Rajiv Kumar, too condoled the death of Sulochana.
