KPAC Sulochana

KAYAMKULAM: Noted singer and actress KPAC Sulochana passed away at Kayamkulam early morning on Sunday. She was 67.

Sulochana had been undergoing treatment for problems related to the vertebral column, said her husband, Kalesh. She was taken to the hospital following complaints of suffocation and chest pain on Sunday morning, but she died on the way.

Her body was placed at the Kerala People's Arts Club (KPAC) headquarters in Kayamkulam from 3.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. for the public to pay homage. Later, she was cremated on the premises of her home `Manimandiram' at Kayamkulam. The Minister for Culture, K.C. Venugopal, the AICC secretary, Ramesh Chennithala, and the CPI(M) Alappuzha district secretary, G. Sudhakaran, among others, paid their last respects.

Ms. Sulochana began her career in theatre through the play `Aahwanam,' penned by Munshi Paramu Pillai, in the early Fifties, said her elder sister, Saraswathi Amma. Later, she joined the KPAC and its play `Ningal Enne Communistaakki' catapulted her to fame. The play was a milestone in the growth of the Communist movement in the State. She was arrested when the then Thiru-Kochi Government banned the drama.

Sulochana has acted and sung in many dramas of the KPAC, including `Sarvekkallu', `Mudiyanaya Puthran', `Aswasmedham' and `Puthiya Aaakasham, Puthiya Bhoomi'. She acted in seven dramas of the KPAC.

She parted ways with the KPAC in 1976 and formed her own troop `Samskara' in 1983. She acted in 10 dramas of Samskara. She also played roles in three films.

Sulochana was a recipient of several awards, including fellowship of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi in 1997, the State award for her contribution to professional theatre in 1999, Premji award for theatre artist in 2004 and Thikkodian award for her contribution to theatre in 2003.

She had won the award of the Kerala Fine Arts Society for her contribution to theatre last week.
