Petrol pumps to be closed today

KOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMKOLLAMKOCHI: Petrol pumps across the State will remain closed for a day on Monday as petroleum dealers under the aegis of the All Kerala Federation of Petroleum Traders have decided to press their demand for, among other things, higher dealer commission and compensation for losses suffered during transport and evaporation.

The dealers are demanding adequate dealer commission from the current levels of 1.7 per cent for petrol and 1.4 per cent for diesel. The president of the Federation, David T. Mooken, said that the dealers had also not been getting shrinkage allowance since 1989. The petroleum dealers have also demanded quality-checking equipment to monitor quality standards at the pumps as well as uniform pricing of petroleum products in the country.— Staff Reporter

Temporary stoppages

KOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMKOLLAMKOCHI: The temporary stoppages provided to five trains at various stations have been extended till further notice, according to a Railway press note. The following are the trains, with the stations within brackets: Kanyakumari-Bangalore-Kanyakumari Express (Chirayinkeezh and Pudukad); Madurai-Kollam-Madurai passenger (Palliyadi and Kuliturai West); Ernakulam-Kannur-Ernakulam Express (Pudukad); Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram Vanchinad Express (Sasthankotta) and Bangalore-Kanyakumari Express (Thiruvananthapuram Pettah). — Special Correspondent

Ganja seized

KOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMKOLLAMKOCHI: Sleuths from the Karunagapally Excise Circle led by Inspector, B. Suresh, today seized 30 kgs of fine quality ganja from three persons from a location near Karunagapally. The ganja, worth several lakhs of rupees in the drugs market, was brought from Idukki and was being taken for sale when the trio were nabbed.- Staff Reporter.

Call for unity

KOCHITHIRUVANANTHAPURAMKOLLAMKOCHI: : The Youth Congress president, K.P. Anil Kumar, has said that nobody in the organisation wants to split the Congress party. If at all there is a split, the majority will be with the mainstream, he said at a press conference here on Sunday. He said a meeting of Youth Congress activists in the State would be held next month, the date of which is yet to be decided. A rally of the activists in the central region will be held on May 23 in Kochi. Earlier, the State committee of Youth Congress met here and decided to reorganise the party at the mandal and block level before April 24. The reception committee for the State meeting will be formed on April 29. — Staff Reporter.
