CHENNAI.: Post-graduate students of the Department of Social Work, D.G. Vaishnav College, learnt the skills to develop the personality of children in Corporation schools through group work at a seminar conducted on Wednesday. Lakshmi Radhakrishnan, chairperson (Academics), Madras Dyslexia Association, spoke about "Assessments and Interventions for Learning Disabilities." Elaborating on the types of disabilities and problems such as hyperactivity in children, she stressed the role of the visual media in tapping the attention of such children. The power of the medium must be exploited through LCD projections and power-point presentations in classrooms. Referring to Howard Gardner's theory on the eight types of intelligence, she said that teachers must keep in mind that every child had all types of intelligence, but in different proportions. A. Balapushparani, lecturer, District Institute of Education and Learning, Chennai, demonstrated the importance of group activities in the holistic development of students. Stating that education was becoming increasingly knowledge-oriented, she underlined how skill and attitude could be inculcated in students through challenging group activities, which would develop their power of imagination. T.S. Premakumar, lecturer, department of Economics, D.G. Vaishnav College, concluded the seminar by highlighting the role of students in fighting the injustices of society.
Earlier, Peer Mohammed, assistant educational officer, Chennai Corporation, inaugurated the seminar, which was also attended by corporation schools teachers.
