Bharathiar-Wyoming varsity tie-up likely

A. A. Michael Raj

COIMBATORE: Bharathiar University and the University of Wyoming at Laramie in the United States are likely to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for academic programmes, within the next few days.

"This MoU would facilitate faculty exchanges, joint research projects, student exchange programmes and even joint programmes with students doing some of their studies here and the rest at Wyoming," the Dean, Graduate School, University of Wyoming, Don Roth, told The Hindu .

Advantages

One of the advantages of the joint programmes was that students would become familiar with academic life at both universities, perhaps doing three semesters in Coimbatore and one in Laramie.

"We have strong programmes in science and we want to meet the faculty here and discuss which programmes are the `best fits'. We have programmes in China, Mexico and countries in Europe, but this will be the first time we are looking for an MoU with an Indian university," Prof. Roth added.

Asked about the likely tie-up, the Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University, S. Sivasubramanian, said that the University faculty would meet Prof. Roth to decide on the type of programmes for various departments.

Prof. Roth said that the University of Wyoming presently had 13,000 students, of whom 400 were international graduate students from 56 countries. The University wanted to increase this number to 600. China accounted for the largest number of foreign students, followed by India.

International students exposed the American students on the campus to a broad diversity of cultures and helped shape their academic perspectives. The Carnegie Foundation regularly ranked the University among the top research universities in the United States.

"International students contribute to the level of research by the departments. With more fellowships available than students to fill them, the majority of the students will be getting scholarships," he said.
