Lorry cleaner rescued from wreckage

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Fire and Rescue Services personnel rescued a man trapped in the wreckage of a lorry early on Sunday. The team also provided him timely medical care.

Karunakaran (39), a cleaner, was asleep in a tipper lorry parked near Anna Siddha Hospital at Arumbakkam when it was hit by a private water tanker at 2 a.m.

Karunakaran was trapped in the wreckage for nearly 30 minutes before a unit of six fire personnel from the Kilpauk branch came to his rescue . Due to want for special equipment, an emergency rescue tender was called in from the Esplanade branch.

Both the teams worked together to rescue Karunakaran after half an hour, said a Fire and Rescue Services personnel.

The victim, who sustained hand injuries, was taken to the Kilpauk Medical Hospital for treatment. Karunakaran is stated to be out of danger, he added.
