MADURAI: Three solar panels worth Rs.54,000 kept on the Madurai Kamaraj University premises were damaged when outsiders broke them to steal their aluminium and copper parts, which they planned to sell for a paltry amount in the scrap market. The panels, belonging to a private concern, had been stored behind the Energy Department for testing. According to university authorities, the theft was noticed by students on Saturday. Alerted by a strange noise, the students chased four persons who tried to escape with the materials. They were later handed over to the local police. This is the second such incident at the university in the last 10 days. Earlier, unidentified persons attempted to break into a house at the residential quarters.
