VISAKHAPATNAM: After a protracted legal battle, Khamrunnisa Begum, owner of a flour mill in Marripalem area, received a shock of her life when she received a notice from the Eastern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Ltd. (EPDCL) to pay a bill for Rs. 5,69,644. After her plea was rejected for second time in the High Court in 2002, EPDCL as part of a recovery drive, served the notice dated March 18, 2005 on her with a warning to disconnect if she failed to pay the total amount within two weeks of receiving it. ``Today, our mill has stopped functioning as the EPDCL has ignored our repeated contention that we have already paid arrears as on 12/1996 amounting to Rs.1.35 lakhs eight years ago,'' Mohammad Madina, son of Khamrunnisa Begum, told reporters on Sunday. ``The EPDCL invited us for talks along with original receipts. The official concerned took all the documents, including the receipt towards payment of Rs.1.35 lakhs promising justice to us,'' he said. However, the EPDCL stated that Rs. 9,02,714 was pending against them, of which Rs.4,68,706 was already paid. After deducting that amount, the consumer had to pay Rs.5,69,644 (inclusive of surcharge).
