Al-Jazeera seeks Arabic version of film-making DVD

"The response has been better than expected.''

NEW DELHI: They shot to fame for being the "communication'' link between America's most wanted man Osama bin Laden and the rest of the world. And having shown exclusive footage of a man now seen only on "video", Al Jazeera seems to be ready to take tips on the art of making videos from three yet-to-be-made-public Indian DVD sets.

A small effort by the Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT) to take the basics of film-making to the masses seems to be have reached farther than expected, with its pilot imitative of DVDs on Video Training Basics not just receiving success but also demands for a medium other than English.

Launched three months ago, the PSBT project is supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), which is also looking after the distributing of the DVDs. "We have just received a letter from UNESCO saying that around 1,500 copies have been already sold and that Al Jazeera has asked if we could provide them with an Arabic subtitle or version. The response has been better than expected,'' said PSBT Director Rajiv Malhotra.

The set of three DVDs has been directed by Pramod and Neelima Mathur and contains three modules -- camera work, sound and editing. Aimed at making the techniques of film-making accessible to all, the DVDs will soon be made available locally too with the PSBT planning to make it an affordable buy.

"We are also planning to bring out a fourth edition on how to read television programmes to sensitise the viewers so that they can interpret news well and learn to find out the information they are looking for. It is still in the working stages,'' added Mr.Malhotra.

The PSBT is hoping that the DVDs will act as a platform for those who are eager to learn film-making but cannot afford a course.
