30.6 acres land set aside at Kesaripalle

VIJAYAWADA: Vocational training classes, outdoor games and self-earning opportunities will form a part of the daily life for prisoners and undertrials at the Vijayawada district jail by the end of next year.

The jail, which is housed in a building at Gandhinagar in the city, will be shifted to a sprawling 30.6 acre premises at Kesaripalle village in Gannavaram mandal, located about 20 km from here.

Construction of a compound wall was already completed. Work on the buildings at an estimated outlay of Rs. 15 crores will begin by the end of next month. The new premises would accommodate over 600 inmates where a special wing would be built for female prisoners. "The capacity of the present jail building is 174. But, we are accommodating over 375 undertrial prisoners," the jail superintendent, P.G.V. Prasada Rao, said. The new jail building would have separate classrooms for academic sessions and vocational training, small-scale industries like phenyl and candle-making, a fabric unit that would supply clothing to the inmates, a vegetable garden, a playground and a 20-bed hospital.

Chance to earn

"Inmates can select their choice of work and earn money during their imprisonment. They can also pursue academic and technical courses of their choice that are available in the jail," Mr. Rao said.
