VIJAYAWADA: Use of leather in footwear manufacturing has been significantly reduced with people preferring synthetic, plastic and also a mixture of plastic, more as a matter of fashion. "There has been a steady shift over the past ten years. It has more to do with changing fashion and technology rather than awareness against use of leather," says Mani Almal, the president of Indian Footwear Components Manufacturers' Association (IFCOMA). Speaking to reporters prior to the inauguration of footwear components' buyer-seller meet here on Sunday, Mr. Almal pointed out that a good amount of textiles was also being used in footwear manufacturing these days.
The Chairman of Popular Shoe Mart, Chukkapalli Pichchaiah, inaugurated the expo-cum buyer-seller meet. Mr. Pichchiah's son Arun Kumar, Managing Director of Popular Shoe Mart, was presented the IFCOMA Excellence Award on the occasion. The manufacturers felt that taxation should be rationalised to encourage local industry.
He said Indian exports of footwear components had been increasing by 16 to 18 per cent every year and the products continued to have good patronage in foreign countries.
