P&T employee arrested

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHI: The CBI on Sunday registered a case against an official of the Post and Telegraph Department in Thiruvananthapuram for accepting bribe from contractors for approving civil works. A team of officials from the Kochi office of the CBI intercepted A.K. Magre at Karipur airport on Saturday while he was leaving for Mumbai. It is learnt that the team recovered cash worth Rs. 80, 000 from him. He was brought to Kochi on Sunday. — Staff Reporter

Relief distributed

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHI: The construction of houses for tsunami victims at Chelanam will begin this month. Land has been purchased for the project, said Dominic Presentation, Minister for Fisheries and Sports. The Minister was speaking after distributing financial assistance to dependents of 41 deceased fishermen here on Sunday. The dependents were given Rs. 1 lakh each. V.K. Ibrahim Kunju, Industries Minister; K. Babu and K.V. Thomas, MLAs; and the Fishermen Welfare Board chairman, A.P. Jayaseelan, attended. — Staff Reporter

Sale of KSHB plots

DPC meeting

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHI: A meeting of the District Planning Committee to approve the projects submitted by the Corporation, district and grama panchayats for 2005-2006 will be held from Monday. The committee meeting will be held from Monday to Wednesday at the conference hall of the district panchayat. The meeting to approve the proposals submitted by the Corporation and district panchayat will be held on May 13. — Staff Reporter

Society inaugurated

KOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHIKOCHI: The former Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court, K. Narayanakurup, inaugurated the Cochin Periodontists Society here on Sunday. In his inaugural speech, Mr. Narayanakurup called for more campaigns to spread awareness on gum-related diseases.
