Historic gate

Sir, The move to reconstruct the royal monument of Thripunithura, North Fort Gate, is commendable when viewed from the archaeological and historical angle. I wish to express my gratitude to the Kochi Refineries Limited for taking up the task of shouldering the financial liability in restoring the North Fort Gate to its original form. Even as the three other gates perished with passage of time, the North Fort Gate stood as a pointer to history. It would have survived the test of time but for the speeding vehicles that are still a menace. I request the authorities concerned to consider building a big gate that may not face menace from speeding vehicles.

Musical walkway

Sir, This refers to the article `Maintaining the Marine Drive' ( The Hindu , April 12). It is true that lack of civic sense has destroyed the beauty of the walkway to a certain extent. Had it been made part of the children's park, the situation would have been different.

While there would be opposition from the public to levy of entry charge, it may not be very difficult for the authorities concerned to get sponsors who can be permitted to put up advertisements without marring the beauty of the venue.

Posting personnel round the clock is the only way to maintain cleanliness.
