THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has stopped supply of drinking water to the areas catered by its Manalayam reservoir in the city since Sunday evening, following the detection of pollutants beyond permissible limits. The areas affected are Ettikonam, Nettayam, Mukkola, Manikanteswaram, Kachani, Moonnammoodu, Kodunganur, Manalayam, Vellaikadavu and parts of Vattiyoorkavu. The KWA detected enhanced presence of sulphate in the water to the extent of 140 mg per litre. This, according to the KWA sources, had been caused by a stream joining the Karamana river. It was found that the water in the stream, which smelled of rotten egg, had turned black in colour, after the rain last week. The waste processing factory of the corporation is situated close to this stream and it is believed that there was seepage of highly polluted water from the factory into the stream.
