ANANTAPUR: The Handri Neeva Jala Sadhana Samithi (HNJSS) asked the State Government on Monday to redesign the water lifting to the project from Srisailam reservoir as it was highly impractical to lift water from 874 feet as intended now. Talking to newspersons the HNJSS leaders, D. Pullaiah, a former MP, K. Ramakrishna, a former legislator of CPI, and Y. Visveswar Reddy of CPI(M) urged the Government to allow lifting of water to Handri-Neeva from 841 ft level, as planned for KC Canal, SRBC, Telugu Ganga and Galeru-Nagari projects. The samithi had already written to the Government and urged the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to change the water lifting design for the project. It was important, as the Chief Minister would launch first phase works in which 216 km canal would be excavated with a plan to irrigate two lakh acres at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,300 crores.
Assured water
The HNJSS leaders mentioned that the possibility of giving assured water to Handri Neeva was already explained to the Government. They suggested that 40 tmcft of assured water be given to the project by modernising the Nagarjunasagar canal system and by saving Krishna water with the construction of Pulichintala project.Besides, another 30 tmcft could be given to Handri Neeva by diverting Godavari water to Krishna delta, they noted. Getting CWC clearances was also possible the same way the Government had secured the clearances for Bheema and SRBC projects. Engineering and irrigation experts had already clarified the possibilities and submitted necessary reports to the Government, the HNJSS leaders said.
