Diplomatic Correspondent
NEW DELHI: "Main naya dil laya hoon" (I have come with a new heart), the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, said on Monday at a meeting with Indian editors. Joining issue with a news channel catch line "Phir Wahi Dil Laya Hoon" (I have come with the same heart), he said this was not true. According to him, the situation in Agra four years ago and New Delhi today was totally different. Even his heart was not the same today as it was four years ago. "I have come with a new heart," Gen. Musharraf stressed. In another development, highly-placed sources told this correspondent that negotiations on the joint statement, issued at 11 a.m. on Monday, took place between Indian and Pakistani officials early into the morning. It was cleared by the two principals Gen. Musharraf and the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh before being read out to the press at Hyderabad House by the Prime Minister himself. Interestingly, presspersons were "betting" about who would read out the statement given the fact that there was one joint statement and two principals. No questions were to be entertained, the press had been told earlier. Finally, it was Dr. Singh. Why? Because the General had read out their last joint statement issued in New York on September 24, 2004.
