Villagers kill leopard

ANANTAPUR: People of Pathikondapalle village in Somandepalli mandal allegedly killed a leopard, which entered the village and attacked two persons and killed a dog on Monday. Villagers killed the wild animal when it was taking shelter in bushes outside the village. — Staff Reporter

5 tribals killed, 16 hurt in road mishap

WARANGAL: Five tribals died instantly and 16 others injured when the tractor they were travelling in collided with bananas-laden lorry late on Sunday night in Maripeda mandal here.

Launch of Handri-Neeva work on April 21

ANANTAPUR: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will conduct `bhoomi pooja' for Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanti project work at Uravakonda on April 21. He is likely to attend a private function at Pattnayakanahalli in Sira Taluka of Tumkur district in Karnataka on April 21 before his visit to Anantapur district. — Staff Reporter

YSR seeks upgradation of State highways

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has urged the Centre to look into the proposals submitted by the State Government to upgrade 17 State highways into National Highways. He brought the matter to the notice of the Union Surface Transport Minister, T.R. Baalu, when the latter called on him here on Monday to extend the invitation for the wedding of his son. — Staff Reporter

Rationalists' plea

to Governor

HYDERABAD: The Federation of Atheists, Rationalists, Humanists Association and the Jana Vignana Vedika have complained to the Governor, S.K. Shinde, against the Government for `suppressing' the order on prescribing the practice of alternative medicines. In a representation submitted to the Governor here on Monday, leaders of the organisations said the State was not taking any action on the order issued by the Centre in 2003. — Staff Reporter

First woman Lion vice-governor

VISAKHAPATNAM: B. Sita Kumari of Lions Club-Visakhapatnam Femina has been elected

vice-governor of Lions district 324-C1 for 2005-06. She is first woman vice governor-elect from Andhra Pradesh and will be elevated as district governor next year. Ms. Sita Kumari is wife of the formerLions district governor, B. Narasimha Rao.

Keshava Rao urged

to constitute DCC

VIZIANAGARAM: The district Congress committee (DCC) at its meeting to elect office-bearers on Monday unanimously authorised the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, K. Keshava Rao, to constitute the DCC. — Correspondent

RTC workers to stage dharna on April 21

HYDERABAD: The APSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation has asked workmen to protest against the GO on contract employment as recommended by the high-level committee. It said on Monday that the proposal would weaken the corporation and called for dharna on April 21 at all depots. M.S. Reddy, president, and R. Lakshmaiah, general secretary, in a statement here alleged that the interim recommendations of the committee appeared to be aimed at closure of the RTC or causing loss to it. — Staff Reporter

Sugarcane gutted

NELLORE: Sugarcane on an extent of eight acres has been gutted in Yerraballipalem village of Vinjamoor mandal. Careless smoking was said to be the cause of the fire.

In another case, a flower shop was gutted at the Podalakur bus-stand last night. The fire was said to be caused by short circuit. Fire tenders controlled the flames. - Staff Reporter

Petrol bunks closed

NELLORE: In accordance with the decision of their national association, petrol bunks in Nellore town remained closed from midnight of Sunday. However some company-managed bunks functioned to cater to the needs of consumers. - Staff Reporter

Ex gratia for

10 families

CUDDAPAH: An ex gratia of Rs. 50,000 each was sanctioned to 10 bereaved families under Apatbandhu scheme, the district Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, said on Monday.

The beneficiary families were those of S. Raghunatha Chari of Pulivendula mandal, V. Khaderaiah of Siddhavatam mandal, G. Narayana of Badvel town, S. Subrahmanyam of Gopavaram mandal, K. Chennakrishna Reddy and R. Ramakrishna Reddy of Veerapunayunipalle mandal, K.G. Babaiah, Khader Basha, D. Babaiah and K. Suman Kumar of Vontimitta mandal, he said in a statement. - - Staff Reporter

Seminar held

NELLORE: A seminar on `C.A. Foundation and job opportunities' was held at the Nalanda Junior College, Nellore, on Monday. More than 200 students and parents attended the seminar, which was addressed by P. Ravindra Babu, Reader in Commerce, V.R. College, Nellore, and V.M.V. Subba Rao, auditor, who explained in detail about the required qualifications for doing C.A. course and prevailing job opportunities. The Principal of Nalanda Residential College, T.
