Power cut

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesday in parts of V.O.C. Nagar and Royapuram areas for maintenance work.

Rama Navami

Rama Navami was celebrated at Sevalaya service centre at Kasuva Village near Thiruninravur on Sunday. T. Parthasarathy, Notary Public and president of Advocates Association, Thiruvallur, was the chief guest.

Prayer meet

A special prayer meeting was organised on Sunday at the Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School for stable governance. D.G.S.Dhinakaran and Paul Dhinakaran conducted the prayer.

Office-bearers

The Builders Association of India - southern regional centre announced its team of new office-bearers recently. L.Moorthy, chairman, P.Dinakar, vice- chairman, S.Sabasti Amalraj, honorary secretary, V.S.B.Sunder, honorary joint secretary and A.V.Ramasamy, honorary treasurer took charge on April 1.

Shirts donated

One lakh shirts, each costing Rs.500, were donated by Lifestyle Business, a division of ITC, Kolkata, to Sri Ramakrishna Mission for free distribution to those affected by the tsunami in Mamallapuram, Kalpakkam, Marakanam, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam.

R.Srinivasan, Chief executive and member of the Corporate Management Committee of ITC, participated in the function at Venpurushan village near Mamallapuram on Sunday.

Traffic diversion

Traffic will be diverted at the Valluvar Kottam and Thirumalai Road junction where Chennai Corporation is constructing concrete roads from Tuesday.

Vehicles entering Thirumalai Road from Kodambakkam High Road should take Periyar Road and Habibullah Road instead of turning onto Thirumalai Road at the junction. However, vehicles coming from Vani Mahal and heading for Thirumalai Road may go straight to Valluvarkottam without taking any diversions.

Drowned

A 12-year-old boy drowned at the Keelkattalai lake on Saturday.

M. Benjamin, a seventh standard student in a Government school in Chromepet, went to the lake with four other friends for a swim. As the water level had increased following the recent rains, the boy was unable to stay afloat and drowned.

Held for betting

The Seven Wells Police on Sunday arrested a local resident for involvement in illegal cricket betting. Police said Ramesh Kumar (42) of Sowcarpet, and two of his friends, Lalith and Paras, had allegedly invited people to pay Rs. 5,000 saying that in case they won a bet, they would get three times the value of the money they had paid.

The information reached the police, who arrested Ramesh Kumar.
