CHENNAI: : Residents of Gopalapuram, Greams Road and MGR Nagar will vote in the by-elections for two Chennai Corporation divisions on Tuesday. Though the results of the elections to divisions 110 and 131 will not have any bearing on the final bench strength at the Chennai Corporation council, where the AIADMK leads the DMK, both parties are seeing this as a prestige fight. The elections are being conducted due to the death of two DMK councillors who represented the divisions. Both the DMK and the AIADMK have fielded their local party representatives in the polls. Division 110 of Corporation Zone VII, situated in and around Gopalapuram, is the smaller of the two wards. The DMK chief and former Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, resides in the division. He will exercise his franchise at Sarada Matriculation School. Division 131 of Corporation Zone IX is situated between Ashok Pillar Road and Ekkaduthangal. There are several slums in the division and brisk voting is expected there. The major fight would be between the DMK and the AIADMK candidates though there are a few other independents in the fray. The AIADMK has fielded M. Mukhilvannan for Division 110 and M. Bhaskar for Division 131. The DMK has fielded P. Balakrishnan and R. Ramamurthi for the two divisions respectively. The Police Commissioner, R. Nataraj, visited the Wards and the counting centres and reviewed the security arrangements.
Suburban areas
Several wards in suburban areas will also go to polls on Tuesday. Ward 6 of Villivakkam Panchayat Union, Chitlapakkam Ward 1 of St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union, Ward 3 of Vellanoor Panchayat, Ward 1 of Alathur Pammathukulam panchayat and Nedunkundram Ward 5 of Kattankulathur Panchayat Union will go to the polls. Mr. Natarajsaid adequate policemen had been deployed in the wards to prevent any untoward incident.
