Thiruvananthapuram
MANY STRETCHES of roads in the heart of the city and periphery have been resurfaced and markings provided as part of the Capital City Development programme. The resurfaced Killipalam-Jagathy-Maruthunkuzhy, Uppidamoodu-GPO, TTC-Museum, Nanthencode-Kuravankonam, YMR-Plamood, Plamood-Thekkumood, Thekkumood-Kannamoola stretches have come as a big relief for road users. The resurfacing had been done by a private firm based in the northern part of the State, using the latest machinery and without causing inconvenience to the citizens in the night. In many stretches, the road stretches had to be dug up immediately following the bursting of the pipeline of the Kerala Water Authority and to rectify the snag of the underground cables of the KSEB and the BSNL. The firm to the surprise of the locals and road users resurfaced the dug up stretches in many roads immediately. A SIGNIFICANT number of IT professionals seem to be developing various physical and mental illnesses, notes an editorial in the last issue of the Indian Medical Association's newsletter. While obesity and its associated ills like diabetes and increased risk for cardiovascular diseases are on the rise among the community, the IT professionals seem more vulnerable to these problems because of their erratic work schedules and lifestyle, the editorial points out. Many practising doctors have been pointing out that the incidence of heart attacks amongst youngsters is on the rise alarmingly. The IMA has thus called for timely intervention to breathe in sense into the youth brigade that a no-holds-barred diet, alcohol, smoking and lack of physical activity would send them sooner or later to the intensive care units of hospitals.
