Blair aide quits over Iraq
Hasan Suroor
LONDON:
In an embarrassing turn to the Prime Minister, Tony Blair's election campaign, a senior Labour Party official in his parliamentary constituency of Sedgefield has quit over Iraq and announced that he would instead be supporting an independent candidate whose son was killed in the Iraq war.
Derek Cattell, who had been a member of the executive committee of Sedgefield Labour Party for 10 years, said Mr. Blair's conduct over Iraq had raised questions about his "integrity,'' and he could not work for him. Mr. Cattell threw his weight behind Reg Keys, father of a British soldier killed in the war and now contesting against Mr. Blair on an anti-war platform.
Mr. Cattell's resignation was not likely to affect Mr. Blair's campaign but observers said it was embarrassing for him to be confronted with the issue in his own backyard.
