BELGAUM: The investment potential for various manufacturing and other industrial activities in the city will be showcased through a unique six-day industrial and trade exhibition called "Belgaum Industrial and Trade Exhibition 2005" to be held at Sardar Grounds on College Road on Wednesday. Already, of the 200 stalls to be erected at the venue, 180 have been booked by various industrial houses, including 10 from outside the State. A few companies with international business have confirmed their participation. The exhibition is being organised by Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industries, in association with the Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Karnataka, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Bangalore, Belgaum Small Scale Industries' Association, and several other organisations. The event is being organised after a gap of 13 years. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, the Deputy Commissioner, M. Maheshwar Rao, said that the primary objective behind organising the exhibition was to show that Belgaum is a potential investment destination in north Karnataka. The Joint Director of the Department of Industries and Commerce, Belgaum, M. Prabhu, said though there is good scope in manufacturing activities, four major areas for investment have been identified textiles, automobile and automobile parts, software production, and floriculture. He said though there was little hesitation among the younger generation to venture into industrial activities, the existing units in and around the city were doing well. Significantly, Belgaum is the second biggest district in the State after Bangalore going in for ISO standardisation. More than 75 units in the city have already obtained the international quality tag. The secretary of Belguam chamber, Shashi Chandgadkar, said that industrialists from the "Golden line," covering south Maharashtra and north Karnataka, are expected to participate. The president of the Belgaum chamber, Venkatesh Hishobkar, said that the district administration had come forward to encourage self-help groups, and women's associations take up industrial activities.
