2 labourers buried alive

KRISHNAGIRI: Two labourers died and three were injured seriously when a sand-laden lorry in which they were travelling overturned at Veppanapalli near here on Tuesday. The victims were identified as Ganesan (39) and Venkatesan (20). The police said five labourers were travelling in the lorry to Karnataka when it lost control while negotiating a curve and overturned. The two labourers were buried alive. The injured are undergoing treatment in the Krishnagiri Government Hospital. — Staff Reporter

2 killed in accident

RAMANATHAPURAM: Two motorcyclists died after having been hit by a state-owned bus here on Tuesday, the police said.

The bus, going to Uchipuli from Ramanathapuram, dashed against the motorcycle while trying to overtake another two-wheeler. Gunasekaran (25) and Kalanjiam (30) of Mandapam died on the spot. The police have arrested bus driver Kasinathan. — Staff Reporter

Nominated

TUTICORIN: Ramasamy Santhanam, Dean, Fisheries College and Research Institute here, has been nominated member of the World Aqua Culture Society (WACS).

Official sources said he was selected for his achievements in fisheries environment over the last two decades.

The membership of the organisation, founded in 1970, would help Dr. Santhanam play a pro-active role in assuring progressive development of aqua culture worldwide. — Staff Reporter

Madurai Deputy Mayor passes away

MADURAI: The Deputy Mayor of Madurai Corporation, T. Chinnasamy, passed away following cardiac arrest in a private hospital here on Monday night. He was 62. He is survived by his wife and five sons.

Representing ward 72, Chinnasamy surprised everyone by winning election for Deputy Mayor post, despite the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, not having sufficient number of councillors. He was one of the five DMK councillors of the first Corporation council. — Staff Reporter

Prem Kumar hands

over charge

KANCHEEPURAM: The Superintendent of Police and Chief Investigation Officer for the Sankararaman murder case, K. Prem Kumar, on Tuesday handed over charge to his successor, R. Samuthirapandi, who was Deputy Commissioner, Chennai.

Mr. Prem Kumar was transferred from Cuddalore to Kancheepuram in December 2004 later took over as the Chief Investigation Officer in the case from the recently-promoted SP, Prohibition Enforcement Wing, Chennai, S.P. Sakthivelu. — Staff Reporter

Sentenced for rape

TIRUNELVELI: The Mahila Court here on Tuesday sentenced two youths to seven years imprisonment in a rape case.

According to prosecution, V. Ponraj (30) of Vickramasingapuram raped a married woman of the area on October 20, 2000 with the assistance of his friend, S. Mahesh (30).

The judge, Murugan, imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 each on the accused. This was given to the victim as compensation. — Staff Reporter

Fined for mining sand

SIVAKASI: The Sivakasi Revenue Divisional Officer, V. Sundaragopal, imposed a fine of Rs. 11.63 lakhs on the Tulukkankurichi panchayat president, Nagarajan, for illegal sand mining on patta land. An enquiry revealed that Mr. Nagarajan quarried 270 lorry-loads of sand without obtaining permission from the Government. The RDO, on Saturday, imposed the fine. — Staff Reporter
